Painting Paradise - the life of artist and botanist Marianne North.

I am working on a series of paintings to explore the life and work of this inspirational Victorian artist.

Marianne was born in 1830 to a life of privilege and wealth but defied convention of the typical Victorian woman by travelling alone to paint the flora and landscape of far flung places. Encouraged by botanists and scientists Charles Darwin and William Hooker, Marianne ditched genteel still lifes painted in watercolours for detailed recordings of exotic plants rendered in oils on paper.
